About

Tamie O'Neil

My educational background began with an associates in applied science. After having children, I went back to school and attained my Bachelors Degree in business administration, followed by my Masters of Science in Mental Health Counseling, and finally my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision.

I began my work in the counseling field assisting parents who were struggling to keep their children in their homes. I gained a better understanding of parenting, children, and adolescent and family dynamics that are strained as a result of mental health illnesses, as well as financial difficulties. I have worked with individuals who struggle with mental health illnesses, as well as those who have issues with addiction. I also have an understanding of some of the issues that individuals who have dual diagnoses struggle with when trying to locate a provider who is willing to work with them.

Some of the areas that I have experience in include: bipolar disorder, PTSD, anxiety, depression, OCD, ADHD, borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and schizoaffective disorder. I have worked with children as young as 7, as well as working with adolescents and adults.

My philosophy is to talk with people to gain an understanding of their goals, and assist them in developing plans for making the necessary changes in their life in order to meet those goals. I use an eclectic approach to assist in the change process. Some of the counseling techniques that I use include strategies from the following types of counseling approaches: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Based Therapy, Adlerian Theory, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Counseling, Humanistic Counseling, and Mindfulness Counseling.

The most important thing that I can say to anyone when engaging in counseling is that they are in control of their sessions, and they decide what they want to talk about, as well as what they do not want to discuss.

When I am not working I enjoy being in nature, walking my dogs, kayaking, camping, biking, painting, stained glass, and reading.
